Danny Boy - Ireland's Best Kept Secret

24 June 2009
Lottery winner Peter lavery checks out the first glass of Danny Boy whiskey, his latest businesss venture with head distiller Noel Sweeney.

Despite the economic downturn, popular Belfast lottery winner and entrepreneur Peter Lavery has recently unveiled his latest business venture, the launch of Ireland's newest blended whiskey.

Distilled in County Louth, Danny Boy Premium Blend is a blend of a four and five year old grain and malted barley which will be available at hotels, bars and off-licences across Northern Ireland from the end of July.

As one who enjoys a fine Irish whiskey, I believe this product will have a place among Ireland's finest whiskey brands. For the discerning whiskey drinker I know it will have all Irish eyes smiling, says Peter.

The Danny Boy brand was actually founded ten years ago and since then particular attention has been paid to the development of the whiskey, along with its cousin, a 15 year old deluxe single malt.  Peter is confident both whiskies will prove as popular as the world famous Irish ballad of the same name, penned by English barrister and lyricist Frederick Weatherly.

In desperate economic times it's vital that businesses invest in the future and that's what I hope to achieve with these products. There may be an air of financial doom out there, but I believe both products will bloom adds Peter.

Have You Got the Gospel Factor? Exciting New Belfast Choir Looking for Singers.

Belfast Community Gospel Choir

The most fantastic musical experience to hit the city in decades, Belfast Community Gospel Choir (BCGC), is currently recruiting energetic singers who've got soul to join them at rock and pop concerts, charitable events, festivals, as well as on television & radio.  With an energetic presentation and a powerful sound, BCGC is Northern Ireland's first ever community gospel choir which aims to be completely multicultural and community based.

Founder Marie Lacey, who is an internationally acclaimed singer/songwriter and musical director, says that the professional choir will sing a mixture of gospel and soul music and will promote the message of love, joy and peace.

With programmes like 'Last Choir Standing' and the popularity of R&B, soul and gospel in general, we felt the time was right to start something completely new here. We're expecting people from all over Northern Ireland to join, and the good news is that you don't have to be of the Christian faith to join, our choir is more about the genre of music and the message of joy and peace. It's truly community in its ethos, said Marie.

Lacey's many musical achievements include managing a 600 voice choir that she formed and directed to support James Galway, Lesley Garret and Peter Corry at the Odyssey Arena Belfast. She has also written several musicals and at the turn of the millennium the Northern Ireland Office commissioned her to write and direct the Millennium Service of Thanksgiving, which was broadcast live from the Belfast Waterfront Hall by the BBC and attended by HRH Prince Andrew.  Marie's own musical career has seen her perform throughout the USA, South Africa, Europe, Canada and Thailand.

BCGC Auditions will be held on 16th June 2009 and 18 August 2009 at the Sports Hall CFC building, Holywood Road Belfast. Auditions are open to everyone aged 16+. Applicants will be required to sing a short, well known piece of music unaccompanied, and follow simple choreography. For further details and online application visit: www.bcgc.biz
