The new womenswear collections from House of Fraser

Making an authoritative fashion statement for the season, the new womenswear collections from House of Fraser, Belfast mark a change in direction for autumn. Offering an impressive array of fashion labels including Kenneth Cole, Therapy, Linea, Episode and Untold, this season’s collections look stronger than ever before. With new brands also launching in-store from Dickins and Jones, Bastyan, Michael Kors, Label Lab and the eagerly anticipated BIBA, it’s an exciting time for the house of brands.

Store manager Michelle Jackson said: “BIBA is an iconic female fashion brand from the 1960’s and I am absolutely delighted that House of Fraser is exclusively launching the brand with a womenswear and accessories collection for autumn/winter 2010. The new collection takes the ethos of the original BIBA but makes it modern and contemporary. We will be one of ten stores in the UK to have a BIBA boutique in-store and will be unveiling it on 09 September.”

Aside from the exciting BIBA launch, the style team have also taken a look at this season’s key trends which are interpreted across many of the collections available in the Belfast store.

Dark brooding romance and gothic overtones combine to create ‘Twilight’; a strong, dramatic story for younger looks with layers of black in contrasting fabrics and textures. Iridescent dark tones mixed with elegant decayed embellishments and Victoriana-inspired lace is a key direction for the trend. The crushed velvet evening jacket will add the ‘Twilight’ factor to almost any outfit, or for a more formal interpretation of the trend, the lace halter neck dress epitomises the sultry, gothic look to perfection.

Femme Fatale
A trend inspired by the film noir period of the 1940s and 1950s, ‘Femme Fatale’ celebrates a
bygone era when screen sirens Rita Hayworth and Barbara Stanwyck were making a killing as vampy villainesses. Evoking thoughts of old Hollywood glamour, refined textures such as silk, satin and velvet appear across a dusty colour palette of vintage shades and classic black. The silhouette is seductive with sophisticated tailoring and cinched waists. Highwaisted pencil skirts, faux fur coats and satin ruffle blouses are the statement pieces guaranteed to create the smoky, sexy allure of a modern ‘Femme Fatale’.

Wild Things
Shearling, sheepskin and faux fur are key fabric directions for outerwear this season. ‘Wild Things’ demonstrates an updated boho style with layer upon luxurious layer of chunky knitted texture and oversized, cocoon silhouettes. A neutral colour palette of biscuit, beige and cream tones combine to create a very wearable, casual-cool collection.

‘Artisan’ celebrates the fusion of old and new to create a look that is modern and fresh with a nod to the traditional. A confident trend with no restrictions; the look takes a dressing-up box approach to style where clashing prints meet an unlimited colour palette and never-ending layers. With a mix and match attitude, there are unique art-style prints and explosive winter florals across satin shift dresses and printed brocade coats.

With theatrical splendour, ‘Pantomime’ is a deliciously quirky trend that embraces its dark
side. Dramatic trims are essential with chains and ruffles galore, seen on lingerie-inspired lace tops and dresses. Perfect for the party season there is an array of opulent dresses. Velvet is a key fabric direction for the season along with satin, jacquard and brocade in a variety of rich jewel colours. The star of the show is a midnight blue velvet shift dress which oozes show stopping glamour.

Fashionable Refreshment with Appletiser StyleFIX Fashion Shows

Watch out fashionistas, a refreshing and sparkling fashion-fix is coming your way. Stephen's Green Shopping Centre has teamed up with Appletiser to bring the last in this summer's series of StyleFIX shows to town for a fashion-filled finale on Saturday 28 August.  

Appletiser, the most refreshing and healthy way to quench your thirst, has been touring the length and breadth of Ireland with the hugely popular StyleFIX catwalk showcasing some of the key late summer and early autumn looks including military chic and lace as well as knee high socks and cute capes - a fashion must this autumn. 

Audience members at the Stephen's Green event will enjoy a complimentary Appletiser, free advice and make-overs from beauty, style and make up experts, and of course the very latest in early autumn fashion on the catwalk. Money will also be raised to support breast cancer charities Pretty in Pink and Action Breast Cancer.

Top cosmetics teams from the MakeupFablicious Academy will treat guests to make up tips and beauty know-how from the on-hand make up artists. The teams will also be giving advice on how to make the most of what's in your make up bag and how to incorporate this autumn's palette into your look.

Stylist and show organiser, Cathy Martin, has her finger firmly on the pulse of all things fashion-related. She says: "Military looks are still around coming into the autumn so we can all recycle our key summer pieces and accessorise to change the overall effect. Think 20th century military uniforms and mix some leather trousers or a pair of knee high socks for a great look that will bring you through late summer into early autumn in style. And speaking of trousers, they're about to come into their own this autumn, with lots of flattering shapes and cuts to elongate the leg and slim the silhouette."

"There are also some trends that you wouldn't really expect to see in autumn, such as cut out and sheer clothing.  Something for the milder days perhaps, but it's all about having the confidence to mix sheer and cut out pieces with other looks to create your own style but also to be practical and keep warm! So we'll be having a bit of fun with a few outfits inspired by this trend on the catwalk too."

FASHIONWEEK launches Diet Coke
'Love it Light' Design Competition

This season, the bi-annual, multi-award winning fashion event which is West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK, has teamed up with Diet Coke to create a design competition which will give fashion design students, young designers and anyone with a flair for fashion the chance to design a commercial, wearable and fashion forward garment which will end up on the BFW catwalk.  Entrants are required to design a womenswear look for the Autumn/Winter season that encapsulates the spirit of the Diet Coke ‘Love it Light’ attitude.  This can be interpreted within fashionable boundaries and changed to, for example, ‘Love it denim’, ‘Love it leather’ or ‘Love it long and glamorous’. 

The winning design will be brought to live by designer to the stars Una Rodden, shown on the catwalk at the finale show at FASHIONWEEK in October, photographed by leading fashion photographer Khara Pringle and featured in a fashion magazine.  The lucky designer will also walk away with a mini scholarship to a fashion course at London College of Fashion, including flights and hotel accommodation to further nurture their passion for fashion.

Bumper to Bumper Style as West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK Announces Opening Show in Victoria Square Car Park

Now a staple on the city’s events calendar, West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK is an integral part of Belfast’s busy shopping and fashion scene. Always fresh, new and exciting, the event provides an inexpensive night out to thousands of fashion fans each season, and this October audience members will not be disappointed, as the runway shows move to a dedicated new space at the Europa FASHIONWEEK centre in Glengall Street. But before that, the opening night will kick off the jam-packed schedule with an edgy, underground car park show in Victoria Square on Wednesday 13 October, where every audience member will have a front row view of the steel runway which will snake its way around the car park.
Featuring the latest collections from House of Fraser, Cruise, Urban Outfitters, Ted Baker and Reiss, among others, the Victoria Square show once again provides another ‘first’ for the city by the event’s creative team. The catwalk then moves to the Europa FASHIONWEEK centre in Glengall Street where a night of designer shows follows, with Una Rodden and Alan Beattie among those showcasing, as well as the region’s top boutiques such as Silk in Newry, SarahJane Boutique in Magherafelt, The Boudoir Dungannon and Candy Plum in Hillsborough. The high street night on Thursday 15 October will showcase a mixture of stores – from French Connection and Karen Millen to Lipsy, Wonderbra, M&S and Hot Diamonds. The wonderful catwalk finale on Saturday 16th will feature a ‘Love it Light’ student design competition sponsored by Diet Coke as well as a selection from Westfield CastleCourt stores including Dorothy Perkins, New Look and Miss Selfridge.

Director Cathy Martin said: “I never get bored of fashion, and never want any of our audience members to get bored of FASHIONWEEK, so we brainstorm every season to come up with new ideas and fresh locations. The car park idea is very urban, very edgy and very cool. And speaking of cool, anyone worried about the temperature in the car park can rest assured that it is really quite warm under there! Also, the new location for the main catwalk shows in Glengall Street is superb, as our growing audiences prefer larger venues with plenty of space to mingle and watch the shows. I’m particularly looking forward to the Diet Coke design competition winner’s outfits on Saturday as well as the menswear from stores such as Blue Inc in CastleCourt, with plenty of eye candy for the girls!”

For the first time, FASHIONWEEK will add to its master class series with a model industry master class including top experts from the industry in Ireland as well as special guest, stylist Grace Woodward, who is a judge on popular TV show Britain’s Next Top Model. Taking place on Saturday 16 October, this one day course will allow participants to walk away with portfolio shots by top fashion photographer Khara Pringle as well as learning about how to get on in the industry – how to pose, how to walk, how to manage portfolios and how to stand out at castings.  One lucky girl on the day will be chosen to model in the finale show, giving her a once in a lifetime opportunity to kick start her career. But all bookings include a ticket to the finale show, so everyone will get to soak up the atmosphere.

Rounding off the schedule is the now popular Style Sunday event, which will take place in James Street South restaurant on Sunday 17 October and support charity Mencap. The chic event, which is sponsored by Vodafone, will see style experts - including designer Una Rodden and stylist Stephen Mageean from Cruise in Victoria Square - team up with make up artist Paddy McGurgan and experts from Boots, who are the beauty partner for the five day event, to take an up close and personal look at the trends for the season between courses. They’ll also take questions and are available for one-to-one sessions on the day.
