BLUSHING BRIDE WIN FOR FIONNUALA
Blush Bridal Boutique announces its Face of Blush for 2013

27 February 2013

Chic Lisburn Road boutique, Blush, has just announced the winner of its fifth annual ‘Face of Blush’ competition following a beautiful and intimate judging event at the Merchant Hotel this month. The lucky bride-to-be is Fionnuala Brady from Rostrevor who now can enjoy the run-up to her big day as she chooses dresses for both herself and her lucky mother from the store’s stunning collections.

A trainee actuary based in Cambridgeshire, Fionnuala will also be featured on Blush’s advertising campaign for the next twelve months following a one-on-one photo shoot with renowned fashion photographer Khara Pringle. On the day of the shoot, Fionnuala will benefit from having her hair professionally styled by Lynette Murray from Blue Hairdressing and make-up by award-winning make up artist Caoimhe Curran. Also provided for this year’s winner is a range of highly sought after cosmetic treatments by facial specialist Martina Collins which will surely add to the experience of Fionnuala’s fairy-tale wedding.

The judging panel that was faced with the difficult task of choosing from the 14 finalists included Belfast FASHIONWEEK Director Cathy Martin, make up artist to the stars Paddy McGurgan, celebrated photographer Khara Pringle and magazine editor Emma Deighan from IN! magazine.

Director of Blush, Aileen Wilson said of the winner, “We are absolutely thrilled that Fionnuala will be the face of our advertising campaign for the next 12 months. She has shown such enthusiasm and a real sense of professionalism in any dealings we have already had with her so I am really excited about working with her this year. A Blush bride can be any woman of any age, so we were delighted to receive entries from both older and younger entrants. Fionnuala captures the spirit of our store perfectly – she has grace, poise, a sense of fun and is brimming with love, as every bride should be. We believe that Khara will capture this spirit in her forthcoming shoot for our campaign.”

In the opulent setting of the Private Dining Room at the Merchant Hotel, judge Cathy Martin added: “As judges, we had a particularly tough time trying to pick a winner from the high calibre entries including books, intricate picture frames, a massive cake and much more from right across Ireland. And we even had to conduct an interview by Skype with a fantastic entrant based in Abu Dhabi! We found Fionnuala encapsulated all that a Blush Bride should be in terms of her natural beauty and dedication to the whole process.”

After hearing the announcement that she would be the new Face of Blush for 2013 Fionnuala said, “I truly am over the moon to have been chosen as the winner. Part of the judging process was to spend the morning with the other brides and even look at their entries – which were beyond creative! The girls were all so friendly and, to me, they’re all Blush brides, but I do feel very special now that I have won. I am honoured to represent Blush Boutique as it has the best selection to choose from out of all the shops that I visited. Plus the service from the staff is second to none.”

The application process kicked off last summer and saw hundreds of hopeful fiancées from all over Ireland vie for the prestigious title for this sought-after store which sees women travel hundreds of miles to view their exclusive collections.

CHRISTINE TRUEMAN'S 'SCREEN LOVERS' EXHIBITION CAPTURES THE GOLDEN AGE OF HOLLYWOOD GLAMOUR

15 February 2013

Local, contemporary artist Christine Trueman is back with a brand new body of work. Her solo exhibition 'Screen Lovers', inspired by the 85th anniversary of the Oscars, will be launched by Carrie Neely Contemporary Art at an Oscar themed night in the QFT on Sunday 24 February.

Sponsored by California Coffee, Christine’s new collection of modern, electric paintings and screen prints will feature silver screen sirens from the Golden Age of Hollywood Glamour such as Ava Gardner, Greta Garbo, Audrey Hepburn and the most celebrated of all actresses, Marilyn Monroe. Other icons captured from that dazzling era are the devilishly handsome leading men Clark Gable, Cary Grant and Humphrey Bogart.

Already recognised for her eye-popping iconic portraits of models and movie stars, 'Screen Lovers' reflects Christine’s continued journey and signature mix of simple, definable expressions with bold, highly textural colours. These colours are then infused into compositions which are abstract to varying degrees yet instantly recognisable. Citing Pop art and artists such as Warhol and Lichtenstein as well as local artists, free styler Neil Shawcross and bold texture fan Leo Casement, as her main influencers, Christine’s blend of hue and free textured strokes bring a vibrant freshness to her style.

Christine’s love for the face, intriguingly, is rooted in her poor ability to remember names but also comments: “I am fascinated with our primitive instinct to catalogue types of features and how babies are programmed to study subtle differences in faces for early recognition.”

When it comes to Christine’s play on colour, her sophisticated breaking of the rules regarding tonal values reflects her true passion. She comments: “Colour is such an important role in my work, in fact in my life generally. Subtlety has never been my strong point and I'm always attracted to art that ‘shouts’ at me and demands my attention. I spend a long time deciding on individual colours for each piece or series of paintings. How the colours relate to each other is crucial.”

Christine is no stranger to the local Belfast arts scene and has gained a lot of press and publicity for her work with paintings often being snapped up before the paint has even dried. Her popularity has even led to her producing a painting of local 50's songstress Ruby Murray live on the first ever episode of BBC NI’s magazine show 'Out of the Blue'. Christine's 'Kate Moss' piece has also proved a massive hit at West Coast Cooler FASHIONWEEK and was bought by local fashionista Cathy Martin for her personal collection.

With both feet firmly on the ground, in demand Christine cites her smartphone as her best friend; her album cataloguing of random snaps means everything to her and her inspiration. Constantly experimenting, Christine comments: “A lot of my work is very spontaneous, I like to be driven by the emotion of the moment. When I return to a painting, I can see that the spontaneity has allowed emotions to dictate a lot more of the work than I was aware of.”

Christine Trueman’s 'Screen Lovers' exhibition launches at ‘Oscars Night’ on Sunday 24 February 2013 at 7pm in the QFT, 20 University Square, Belfast with a cocktail reception courtesy of Jameson. The exhibition runs until Friday 8 March.
