Future fashion designers from across Northern Ireland are this week putting the finishing touches to inspiring collections as they prepare to showcase their latest designs in the hotly anticipated Ulster University Graduate Fashion show which will take place at the Europa Hotel in Belfast on 26 May.
Stephen King MA Des RCA, Fashion Lecturer, Belfast School of Art at Ulster University said: “The students’ work on the catwalk will no doubt be a proud display of their unique style and individual vision.   With some truly inspiring and creative pieces including knits, prints and jaw-dropping silhouettes in the mix, the students are sure to wow the audiences.
“You wouldn’t believe how quickly the years fly in, one minute you have a room full of fresh faces, eager to learn new techniques and start designing, and then in the blink of an eye, just a few years later the same students have flourished into aspiring young designers, ready to showcase their own creations.  Their development in itself is such an achievement and the standard of work produced each year is outstanding, so it’s exciting to see the students off with a finale like this catwalk showcase.”
Final year student Amy Scanlon talks of her collection: “From the conceptual idea in my head, to putting pen to paper and sketching out a 5 piece collection, right through to the uncountable and pain-staking hours at a knitting machine, it’s cathartic to come full circle now as we prepare for our pieces to come alive on real life models, with professional hair and make up to create a full fashion theatre experience.”
Classmate Roseanna Crawford adds: “Having the show brings the whole project from academia to the commercial world, and it has certainly helped me learn the importance of things like commerciality versus creativity for example, so it is such a fantastic way to finish our degree and help launch our fashion careers.”
The students will see their collections modelled on show producer Cathy Martin’s CMPR Models with hair perfectly styled by the inventive team at Andrew Mulvenna hair and beautiful make up looks created by the talented artists at MNX Pro.
Tickets are on sale now at just £15 per ticket, which includes a fabulous goodie bag and are available from

Hot on the heels of their historical win as the first Northern Irish salon to take home the coveted Artistic Team of the Year award at the British Hairdressing Awards 2015, the creative consultants at Shane Bennett Salon prepared for some exciting new changes in 2016, as Sunday 24 April saw their relocation to Lisburn city centre after almost two decades in Hillsborough.
From a quaint Georgian terrace on Hillsborough Main Street to the urban city centre location of Lisburn Square, this stylish new salon offers a fabulous streamlined interior which is both bright and spacious, with a modern and contemporary feel.
Owner Shane Bennett, three time winner of Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year, said : “After 15 years in our much more traditional salon in Hillsborough we felt it was time to move forward with the success of our team and rebrand and relaunch with some much more modern and minimalist surroundings which, I hope, will enhance the creativity of our now multi-award-winning team.
“Our new salon is much more reflective of our creative style as a team, with a focus on sharp lines and a much edgier feel.  The space was designed with the concept of being a creative platform for the team, taking inspiration from the daring styles of the award-winning Northern Ireland Hairdresser of the Year campaign from artistic directors Julie Cherry and Collette Fitzpatrick that we have prominently displayed across the salon.  It’s an exciting new chapter for both the team and our stylish clientele.”
Clients from throughout Northern Ireland will benefit from an enhanced customer experience, as the bespoke unit can be found nestled in the beautifully restored courtyard in Lisburn Square surrounded by much-loved fashion stores and delicious eateries, with easy access to the city centre and parking a-plenty. Shane’s team draws in customers from Dungannon and Belfast as well as right across the Lagan Valley towns and villages including Lisburn, Moira, Dromore and Banbridge amongst many others and he hopes this will grow with the increased parking facility as well as passing footfall in the busy centre of Lisburn.
Now in business for over 15 years, the salon’s relocation will create 5 new jobs in the area, adding to an already impressive 16 positions within the company.
